Program
Description:
An
interactive eight (8) weekly session, multicultural parent
education program promoting Reading, Writing, Math, and Social
Studies Skills by teaching families to use their cultural heritage
to help students achieve ACADEMIC SUCCESS. Parents learn "best
practices" on how to teach and motivate children to learn at
home using cultural activities as a resource. The program focuses
on Latin American cultural heritage (Mexico, the Caribbean Islands
and African cultures); history, geography, art, food, customs, and
traditions. We highlight the importance of parent participation in
their children's education, increasing parental
involvement/volunteers in schools, children’s self-esteem,
cultural pride, and cultural diversity and understanding. A ONE
TIME STAFF DEVELOPMENT PRESENTATION CAN BE SCHEDULED.
Participants
Will:
Learn
how to teach math skills in the kitchen while cooking
Learn
how to promote writing by creating a booklet of cultural values,
family stories, & "dichos" (proverbs)
Promote
children’s self-esteem by using music, dance, foods,
painting cultural murals, etc.
Learn
how to promote reading at home by using storytelling about
Indigenous cultures of Latin America and Africa
Learn
how the school system works, increase parental involvement, &
participate in a school's cultural celebration
Learn how to teach geography,
history, cultural mural making, and map drawing
