Program Description:

"Quinceañera"/Rites of Passage - A cultural education program that explores the Latin American customs and traditions of young girls "coming of age" and their connections with their cultural values. The program teaches the importance of staying in school, preparing for college, and becoming responsible young adults. The program focuses on goal setting, decision making, leadership skills, self-esteem, and self confidence. Reading, writing, art, and history are promoted through cultural education activities. PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS ARE WELCOMED TO PARTICIPATE.

Students Will:

  • Learn to write a "Family/Cultural Values" booklet

  • Create and paint a family cultural mural

  • Learn to do research and do presentations about different careers and colleges

  • Read biographies about successful people and positive role models

  • Learn history, culture & traditions of Mexico, Latin America & the USA

  • Learn "life skills" to use at home and school

  • Learn to write a goal setting & academic plan

Program Details:

Dates: September 1-December 15 and February 1-May 15

Times: Open

Duration: 2.0 hrs each session

School Fee: $1,000- 4 weekly sessions ($250 each)

Attendance Minimum: 5

Attendance Maximum: 40

Bilingual Presentation: Yes

Technical Needs: VCR, Overhead Projector, Tables

Other Info: Parents and Grandparents are encouraged to participate but girls can come without them.
